Parthenope is a woman who takes the name of her city. Is she a siren or a myth? In Greek mythology, Parthenope is a siren who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus. Her body was carried by flood to the place where Castel dell’Ovo now stands, which is why she gave the name to the city that later became Neapolis, Naples. Phenomenal, sophisticated, sublime. Sorrentino creates a work of art worthy of his name and a style that belongs only to him. Sorrentino offers us a return to Italian auteur cinema. Moments of silence dominated by the typical Antonioni look, the metaphorical and urgent sensuality in the style of Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris”, the sense of mystery, darkness and tension typical of Tornatore. A wonderful Naples, almost painted, but also raw, naked, poor and unhappy. In this film, Naples is for Sorrentino what Rome was for Fellini, presenting the capital as a synecdoche of national ideals and values, but also as a city of power and great cultural, social and political influence.
